NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is the
science of how the brain codes learning and experience. This coding
affects all communication and behaviour. It affects how you learn
and how you experience the world around you.
Dr John Grinder and Richard Bandler invented
NLP back in the 70's. Together they studied talented individuals
such as Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir. They documented
their observations and learning of the language patterns used
in a linguistic model. This model provided the strategies these
highly successful people used which in turn they distilled into
handy tools that other people could use to achieve similar success.
Since the birth of NLP many experts have enhanced and added new
tools.
NLP is described by some as the Art and Science
of personal excellence, and offers practical ways of changing
your experience of life, and helping you achieve a wide variety
of goals. Each of us as our own internal model to make sense of
the world around us. Because we all have different experiences
through life we all have our own unique model "map of the
world". Our "map of the world" affects our thoughts,
feelings and behaviours. By understanding the structure of our
"map of the world" we can identify and change negative
thought patterns that inhibit us. By understanding someone else's
"map of the world" we can assist them in doing the same
thing, or use this knowledge to improve our relationship with
them.
NLP is like a large tool set, you can
pick and mix which tools you use, some tools are used in therapy
and self-help and some are used in business.
