CHILDBIRTH

Hypnotherapy can provide a wonderful sense of calm and well-being and enables you to prepare emotionally for the most fantastic event in your life – the safe arrival of your child. You will be able to view the birth process with confidence and an inner strength. Hypnotherapy empowers you to trust your body to instinctively know what to do, allowing you to relax and enjoy the experience. It is highly relaxing for the mind and body.

Whether you decide to have a hospital, birth-centre or home birth, it is vital that you feel in control and relaxed in the environment and with the birth process.

With hypnotherapy you can relieve stress and anxiety. This relief can help achieve a calm birthing experience, and later calm the emotions during the post-natal period.

Fear is the single greatest factor that you can change about your labour. Fear inhibits labour, constricts the blood supply and increases the perception of pain. If you can remove fear then you can aid your own body to do what comes naturally and that is to birth a baby comfortably and easily.

Hypnosis removes stress from the experience of childbirth so a swift, comfortable birth of a relaxed baby is more likely to result.

Research has shown that hypnosis for childbirth can help:

  • To increase confidence for preparation and childbirth
  • To shorten length of labour
  • To reduce the use of pain medication
  • Leads to reduction or elimination of fear, tension and pain before and during birth
  • 20 – 25% achieve complete elimination of pain
  • Minimises maternal exhaustion
  • Promotes speedier delivery and recovery
  • Reduces the incidence of instrumental / surgical deliveries
  • A relaxed and healthy baby has less chance of distress
  • Promotes higher Apgar scores
  • Can help with lactation or suppress it
  • Reduce incidence of post-natal depression

Hypnotherapy for childbirth uses powerful suggestions for relaxation and confidence as well as suggestions for analgesia, and the sessions usually begin at the start of your second trimester. The sessions also teach you self-hypnosis techniques for you to use during labour as well as ways in which your birth partner can assist you through the birth. All the information and techniques you need are taught over four or five sessions.

I was expecting my first baby and felt anxious about the birth and worried how I would manage. I was recommended Caroline and after our first conversation I felt better. The sessions were very relaxing and helped me be calm and feel in control. My son had a good birth without any complications and is definitely something I would do again! I would recommend Caroline as she helps you to trust in your body and feel calm. D Conway, Leeds

I was very nervous about giving birth to my baby, despite the fact that it was my second child. Probably more nervous than I had been the first time.

Caroline suggested that a course of hypnotherapy would help me deal with this. I have to say I was sceptical, but by the end of just the first session I was a lot more relaxed and confident about labour and my nerves had fallen from 10/10 to about 4/10.

I listened to Caroline's CDs every night before giving birth which not only helped me relax but I had a fantastic night's sleep after them!

I was in hospital for four days before my daughter was born and listened to them a couple of times during the day and at night and felt much better afterwards.

When my contractions started I was able to manage the pain. Unfortunately, I needed a lot of medical intervention with the birth so I was unable to concentrate on Caroline's voice but I was a lot calmer due to the hypnotherapy. Had I had a normal labour and birth I think I could have at least delayed my pain relief or even avoided it all together.

I am a complete convert now and think that hypnotherapy took away the fear factor for me and helped me relax and enjoy my pregnancy and first stage of labour. Louise Mabbitt-Granahan, Leeds
